Healing & Safety Information
All piercings create a small wound that must be allowed to heal properly. Maintaining cleanliness and following after-care instructions significantly reduces the risk of infection and complications.

If you experience unusual pain, redness, heat, swelling, discharge, or delayed healing, seek professional advice promptly.

During healing you may experience mild tenderness, sensitivity, or swelling. This is normal. However, improper care, pressure, or excessive handling can interfere with the healing process.

Key points to remember:
-
Do not remove jewellery if infection is suspected.
-
Some piercings may not heal successfully due to body type, lifestyle, or constant pressure.
-
Metal sensitivity may cause itching or inflammation.
-
Minor bleeding may occur — apply gentle pressure.
-
Avoid touching or playing with fresh piercings.
-
Needle piercing is always recommended over piercing guns for reduced trauma and improved healing.
General Healing Advice
Healing is a gradual process that varies between individuals and piercing types. While the surface may appear healed within weeks, deeper tissue healing takes much longer and is essential for creating a strong, flexible piercing channel.

Most piercings require 6 weeks to 12 months to heal fully.

To support your healing:
-
Avoid pools, spas, saunas and baths.
-
Minimise friction, pressure, and movement at the site.
-
Support your body with good nutrition, hydration, and rest.
-
Multivitamins or zinc supplements may assist healing. Always consult a medical professional before starting any new supplements.
-
Do not change jewellery for at least 6 weeks, or longer if advised by your piercer.
Cleaning & Daily Care
Consistent, gentle cleaning is one of the most important steps in successful healing.

-
Always wash hands thoroughly before touching your piercing.
-
Clean gently using mild liquid soap and clean water.
-
Avoid over-cleaning or harsh products.
-
Rinse thoroughly in the shower and gently remove any dried build-up.
-
Pat dry with a clean tissue or cloth.
-
Use only piercing-specific, alcohol-free after-care products.
-
Apply product at both entry and exit points.
-
Avoid cosmetics, perfumes, lotions, and sprays near the piercing.
-
Do not create homemade solutions or remedies.
Site-Specific After-Care
Each area of the body heals at a different rate. Movement, friction, moisture levels and blood supply all affect how your piercing heals. The following guidelines will help you understand what to expect and how best to care for your piercing throughout the healing process.
The expected healing times listed below are a general guide only, as individual healing rates may vary depending on the person and the piercing location.

Ear Lobe
Expected healing: 6–8 weeks
Ear lobe piercings generally heal easily with minimal discomfort.
-
Keep the area clean and avoid unnecessary handling.
-
Change your pillowcase within the first few days to minimise bacteria exposure while sleeping.
-
Avoid sleeping directly on the piercing where possible.

Ear Cartilage
Expected healing: 6–12 months
Cartilage piercings require extra patience. Cartilage has a lower blood supply than softer tissue, meaning healing is slower and infections can become more serious if left untreated.
-
Expect tenderness and swelling during the early stages.
-
Avoid pressure from sleeping, headphones, helmets, or tight hair.
-
Full healing can take 12 months or longer.
-
If you notice prolonged redness, heat, throbbing, or discharge, seek medical advice promptly.

Nostril
Expected healing: 2–4 months
Nostril piercings are delicate and can be easily irritated during the first few weeks.
-
Secure the jewellery with a padded adhesive (such as a small band-aid) at night for the first week to prevent movement.
-
Take extra care when washing your face, drying your skin, and changing clothing.

Septum
Expected healing: 8–12 weeks
Septum piercings generally heal well but the area is sensitive during early healing.
-
Avoid unnecessary movement or flipping of the jewellery.
-
Clean gently and follow all general after-care instructions.
-
Be cautious when blowing your nose and avoid products near the area.
-
If swelling, redness, or discomfort increases rather than improves, seek advice.

Navel
Expected healing: 6–12 months
Navel piercings experience frequent movement and friction, making healing more challenging.
-
Keep the area covered for the first few days.
-
Avoid tight clothing and protect from knocks and pressure.
-
Avoid touching and keep hair away from the jewellery.

Nipple
Expected healing: 6–12 months
Nipple piercings heal slowly and require consistent care.
-
Wear soft, supportive clothing.
-
Avoid friction and unnecessary movement.
-
Maintain excellent hygiene and monitor for irritation.

Eyebrow
Expected healing: 8–12 weeks
Eyebrow piercings heal relatively quickly but are prone to migration if disturbed.
-
Avoid pressure, excessive movement, and touching.
-
Protect the area during sleep and physical activity.

Oral – Lips
Expected healing: 6–8 weeks
Oral piercings require excellent hygiene due to the moist environment.
-
Rinse with antiseptic mouthwash twice daily.
-
Dilute mouthwash after day two.
-
Use a new toothbrush.
-
Avoid touching with hands or tongue.
-
Ensure correct jewellery length to prevent rubbing on teeth and gums.
-
Check and tighten jewellery balls daily.
-
Anti-inflammatory medication may help reduce swelling (consult a healthcare professional).

Oral – Tongue
Expected healing: 4–6 weeks
Tongue piercings experience significant swelling initially.
-
Keep the mouth cool for the first 24 hours.
-
Avoid hot, spicy food and drinks.
-
Rinse frequently with diluted antiseptic mouthwash.
-
Avoid alcohol, smoking, and kissing while healing.
-
Return in 10–14 days for downsizing once swelling reduces.
-
Avoid playing with the jewellery.
Downsizing Your Jewellery
Downsizing refers to replacing your initial piercing jewellery with a shorter or more fitted piece once the initial swelling has reduced. This is a normal and essential step in the healing process and plays a key role in ensuring long-term comfort and healthy healing.

Initial jewellery is intentionally longer to allow for swelling. As the swelling decreases, excess length can cause unnecessary movement, irritation, snagging, and pressure on the piercing. If left too long, this can slow healing and increase the risk of complications such as migration, scarring, or damage to surrounding tissue.

Most piercings require downsizing within 7–14 days, depending on the location and how your body responds. Your piercer will advise you on the appropriate timeframe and will professionally change the jewellery to ensure the piercing is not disturbed or damaged.

We strongly recommend returning to your piercer for downsizing rather than attempting to change the jewellery yourself. Professional downsizing ensures correct sizing, sterile handling, and minimal trauma to the healing piercing.

If you notice increased irritation, pressure, or redness as swelling decreases, please contact your piercer promptly — downsizing may be required sooner.
